Music is a life-long pursuit of expression, connection and meaning
Welcome to my site!
I am Bala Skandan, a performer, teacher, and composer based in New York.
With a deep passion for Carnatic music, I specialize in the Carnatic violin, Mridangam, Kanjira, and Konnakkol (vocal rhythm). As both an educator and lifelong student, I am constantly learning and evolving through collaboration with talented peers and artists from diverse musical traditions.
While I hold a strong respect for the rich heritage of Carnatic music, I also enjoy the process of innovation—finding new ways to express ideas within its classical framework. My compositions explore fresh possibilities within traditional ragas, often incorporating intricate rhythmic layers to create a dynamic, evolving sound.
I believe in the power of structured training, balanced with an open, collaborative approach to teaching and learning. I encourage my students to engage in thoughtful dialogue and creative exploration.
This is a little about me, and now I’d love to hear about you. Whether you’re here to learn, listen, collaborate, or explore, I invite you to join me on this musical journey…
