Workshops & Residencies

Carnatic rhythm as a language for musicians, composers and dancers.

Bala Skandan offers interactive workshops and residencies introducing participants to the rhythmic language of Carnatic music through listening, vocalization, movement and percussion.

Sessions can be designed for universities, conservatories, ensembles, dancers and musicians from a wide range of backgrounds.

Workshop Topics

Carnatic Rhythm: An Introduction

An interactive introduction to tāla, rhythmic subdivision and the spoken language of konnakkol. Participants learn rhythmic ideas by speaking, clapping and playing them together.

Konnakkol: Speaking Rhythm

A hands-on exploration of the vocal language of Carnatic percussion. Participants learn how spoken syllables can be used to understand, internalize and create increasingly complex rhythmic structures.

Rhythm, Improvisation & Composition

Using Carnatic rhythmic concepts as creative tools, participants explore subdivision, phrase development, improvisation and the construction of larger rhythmic forms.

Rhythm for Dancers

An exploration of the relationship between rhythm and movement, using konnakkol and Carnatic rhythmic structures to develop rhythmic awareness, phrasing and interaction.

Formats & Residencies

Workshops can be offered as individual lecture-demonstrations, intensive sessions or multi-day residencies. Programs can be adapted to the experience and interests of the participants, from students encountering Carnatic music for the first time to professional musicians, composers and dancers exploring its rhythmic language in greater depth.

Residencies can combine workshops, ensemble coaching, individual sessions, performance and collaborative work with students and faculty.
